The population of the UK is complex and changing. This section includes information on population profiles and the main causes of change. We include details of the population profile, trends, and migration as well as household composition, lifestyle and social trends.
The rate of population change depends upon two interrelated factors; the natural change (the difference between births and deaths) and the net effect of people migrating to and from the country. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) projects that the UK population will increase by around ten million people between 2007 and 2031. Average annual growth is expected to be around 0.7 per cent in England, 0.5 per cent in Northern Ireland, 0.4 per cent in Wales and 0.2 per cent in Scotland.
