The Marriage Act came into force in 1837 in England and Wales, and records show that 118,000 marriages were registered in 1838, the first full year of civil registration. The annual number of marriages generally rose until the 1940s, apart from peaks and troughs around the two world wars, and peaked in 1972 at around 426,000.
